Typically these systems use a bank of batteries along with the Solar PV panels to supply power to the building when the electric utility grid is down.

For this type of system, DC power from the solar array travels to a charge controller which constantly monitors the level of charge to the batteries.  If the batteries are low on charge, electricity passes to them.  If they are fully charged, the electricity passes to an inverter and to the electrical wiring of the house.  When the sun is not available, the utility grid provides power to the house like a
Grid-tie System
Grid-tie with Backup Systems make up less than 10% of the Solar PV Systems in homes and businesses today.  These systems are used when the electric utility grid is unreliable and when the constant operation of some appliances in the home or business is essential.  This type of system is one step closer to total energy independence.
grid-tie system.  When there is no power from the utility grid, however,  power is provided by the batteries and the Solar PV array.  This backup system provides power to a limited number of appliances for a limited amount of time.  Fossil fuel type generators or wind generators can also be incorporated into this system to extend the amount of power available during utility grid down time.

This system is more complicated than a Grid-tie system, and is more expensive.  There is also some maintenance involved with the battery bank and/or generator.
